Interview with Dennis Quaid and cast for A Strange World
a strange world is Disney’s theatrically released animated film that tells the story of Searcher Clade (voiced by Jake Gyllenhall) a brilliant family man who, as a teenager, discovered a plant-based energy source that changed the world. Quaid’s character is Searcher’s dad, Jaeger, who from an early age set out to be the kind of explorer that legends are made of. A statue in the city confirms that he achieved his goal, but he was lost on one of his expeditions and nothing has been heard from him for decades. His grandson, Searcher’s son Ethan, is a cheerful 16-year-old with a great sense of humor and a decent (for a teenager) work ethic. Ethan helps out on the farm, but he’s not sure he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps, to take up the legacy started by that lost grandfather.

“The biggest talent (of Meridian, her character) I think is being a fighter pilot in her previous life, before she was a mother and a wife. She was very rude. He was an amazing fighter pilot and he kind of crushed some of those skills and those talents, but when his family needs him the most, he’s able to take back his past and take back some of that bravery and those skills to not only save his family but also to their community”, said Gabrielle Union, one of the protagonists.

The film also explores the father and son relationship of both Jaeger with his son Searcher who chose a different path and Searcher with little Ethan. Accepting that children follow a path that is different from what their parents want or mark is another of the axes of this film.

Dennis, in your case, how do you define yourself as a father in the film and also in real life?
Before you have children, you imagine what they are going to be and what they are going to be like based on how you grew up and what was expected of you and who you are today. And then your son is not going to be like that, he is going to be your own explorer, like me in this case. And the children come to your house from the hospital, it is as if a stranger moved in, and has ideas of his own that have nothing to do with what you expect. It can be disappointing in a way and they are really blowing your own ego. The movie is about letting people be who they are and it’s about being who you are instead of what you’re supposed to be and that’s how you’re going to make your best contribution to the world around you.
The concept of diversity that the film incorporates is very interesting. What is your opinion about this change in the scripts in the last 10 years?
Jaboukie Young-White: I think it’s very cool and I think that Strange World it’s part of a growing trend that simply reflects what our reality looks like in a way that points to complacency, and I think that’s really what’s exciting about this movie.
Gabrielle Union: My character’s voice is very close to mine, she is a very adventurous woman, has a great life, loves her family and is very committed to loving her family, particularly her son, for being exactly who they are . As the mother of someone who is queer, this is my true voice, and I carry it with love and respect, always offering protection and guidance in the kindest and most respectful way.
