Held in Portugal since 2002, the World Animation Festival (FMA) appears as a global event that marks the World Animation Day (October 28) and which is replicated, simultaneously, in more than 40 countries. In Portugal, it has passed through several cities, with the 21st edition being hosted in Coimbra, at Casa das Artes Bissaya Barreto and at Casa do Cinema de Coimbra.
This year, the program is held together with the Freeze Frame Seminar, organized by Taumotrópio/Monstra – Lisbon Animation Festival, a cycle of conferences that has several national and international participants who will reflect on the artistic creation of animated films. .
On the 26th (Wednesday) and 27th of October (Thursday), the Casa do Cinema de Coimbra welcomes some of the most outstanding and awarded directors of today, both Portuguese and international, in an intense dialogue in which topics such as Expressive , Music, Documentary or New Dimensions and Technologies. Portuguese directors Laura Gonçalves, Xá (Alexandra Ramires), Joana Imaginário, Regina Pessoa and Catarina Sobral, Polish visual artist Joanna Kożuch, Italian director Lorenzo Degl’Innocenti, British animator Paul Bush, singer Manuela Azevedo and programmer Fernando Galrito are some of the players. From 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm, films by the participating directors will also be shown.
From the 28th to the 30th of October, the World Festival of Animation begins, which will present cinema sessions with national and international films, cinema programs for schools in the municipality and masterclasses. Highlight for the morning masterclass on the 28th (Friday), “Layout, sets and where they live”, with Brazilian author Eduardo Damasceno, who supervised the final art of sets for the Oscar-nominated animated film “Wolfwalkers”. From 16:00, João Moreira, co-creator and voice of Bruno Aleixo, proposes to talk about the creation of the character, its evolution, the expansion of its universe and the entire creative process inherent to its development in the masterclass “Writing from argument to humor”.
To mark World Animation Day, Regina Machado, from the direction of Casa da Animação, highlighted the premiere, at 9:30 pm, of the film “Nayola”, the first feature film by Portuguese director José Miguel Ribeiro, who will be present for the presentation.
On the 29th of October (Saturday), throughout the day, the films comprising the Trickstar Nature Award and the Best Of International Competition of the Stuttgart International Animation Festival will be screened. The masterclasses “From the stage to animation – My journey/ The role of the animator” will also take place, with Rita Sampaio and “Character animation for feature films”, with the animator Thiago Calçado. At the end of the day, the winners of the 2022 National Animation Award will be announced during the Closing Ceremony and Prize Giving.
The last day (October 30, Sunday) is a day dedicated to families (but open to the entire public), with the screening of two films in the afternoon: the multi-award winning “Wolfwalkers” and the “Best of Tricks for Kids”.
The program also includes the exhibitions “Prémio Nacional da Animação 2022”, an exhibition of the finalist films nominated in the three competitive categories of the National Animation Award 2022 and “Freeze Frame”, a collective exhibition composed of frames from an album that brings together twenty of most important animation directors from various countries. Opening on the 26th of October (Wednesday), at 18:00, there is a guided tour of “Freeze Frame” on the 29th (Saturday), at 17:45. The exhibitions will be on view from October 26 to 29, at Casa das Artes Bissaya Barreto, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, with free admission.
The Coimbra City Council supports both initiatives, which also have the partnership of local cultural agents and structures, such as the Caminhos do Cinema Português Festival, the Casa das Artes Bissaya Barreto, the Casa do Cinema de Coimbra, the Center for Cinematographic Studies of the Academic Association of Coimbra and the Cineclube Fika K.
