Criticism of The Legend of Vox Machina season 2: one of the best animated series returns

We return to Exandria. We return to one of the funniest fantasies in current animation. Today The Legend of Vox Machina returns with its second season to Prime Video. And the children smile.

One year after its brand new launch, the Critical Role actorsthat they gave the ear to a server in an interview a few days agoreturn to the fore with the promise of a third season that is already in development.

The Legend of Vox Machina follows the story of a group of heroes in the fantasy world of Exandria: Vex (Laura Bailey) and his brother Vax (Liam O’Brien), the bard Scanlan (Sam Riegel), the cleric Pike (Ashley Johnson), the barbarian Grog (Travis Willingham), gunslinger Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) and druid Keyleth (Marisha Ray).

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Directors Compare The Movie To The MCU

the series is based on the Dungeons & Dragons RPG campaign Broadcast on Twitch with which the Critical Role group, under the direction of Matthew Mercer, captivated thousands of people around the world. And for example, a button: they financed the series with more than 11 million dollars in just 45 days on Kickstarter.

For neophytes in the matter, D&D is a board game which, under extensive regulations, allows players to create unique stories in which they themselves become protagonists by creating and playing their own characters in worlds of all kinds.

The good guys at Critical Role have been playing as friends and professionals in the world of voice acting for years and, after closing the arc of the Vox Machina group, other campaigns have followed such as The Mighty Nein or Bells Hells, all based on the same world of Exandria.

A year ago we said goodbye to our heroes after facing the dragon Brimscythe and finishing the Briarwood arc, with Sylas Briarwood biting the ground. At the final celebration, in Emon City, we were left with the cliffhanger of the terrifying Chroma Conclave airstrike. Things are going to get ugly. Very ugly.

With the characters assigned and the board ready, I display the master and analysis notes to begin the spoiler-free review of The Legend of Vox Machina season 2.

The heroes of Vox Machina will find their power

Starting with the most imminent: what is the Chroma Conclave? Without going too deep, it is about a sinister group of five dragons who want to end the society that controls Tal’Dorei, the continent of Exandria in which the series takes place.

And no, here the dragons are not friends. The dragons will be, as for the unfortunate inhabitants of King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, an absolute burning nightmare. The initial sequence is responsible for putting us on notice that in this season the escalation of danger and brutality is going to be absolute.

In the midst of the maelstrom of chaos and violence and with the goal of stopping the Chroma Conclave, our already established group will have their moment to develop individually, with special interest in Grog and the subplot behind his sword, Craven Edge.

We will have internal conflicts in which, once again, the dialogues will be the peak of the quality that the Prime Video premiere. We love seeing the action scenes, especially now that we have dragons and a much more bombastic backstory, but we also want to see what the heroes of Vox Machina are going to become.

As Travis Willingham told us, they didn’t have to ask the animators to go a little further when it came to building the scenes. They have done. Because it’s what the body asked for, and that’s what we received: new original locations that increase the fantastic wealth of Exandria.

Humor remains another strong point of the series. Sharp, no holds barred, and just the right swear words to make the story as real as it was on the board.

Now, if you add special effects, animation, and a soundtrack to these excellently improvised dialogues by its protagonists, and a soundtrack that is to keep on loop for the next few weeks while we work imagining that we are facing a dragon, fun is once again guaranteed.

I have to admit, however, that there is a certain part in the animation of the Chroma Conclave dragons that doesn’t quite fit me, leaving the near fluidity of the classic animation for one with more volume and more processed that doesn’t quite fit.

A natural 20 in charisma for his characters

The first season was an absolute gem, hilarious, original and dynamic, with the powerful dialectical base of the campaigns refined to culminate a product that is the fruit of the imaginations of all its protagonists. The second is more and even better of the same, And what if this is not the best news they could give us.

We will go from moments of laughter to moments in which a few tears will rush inconsolably and quickly from our eyes with just a few minutes apart.

That is, precisely, the best definition of what The Legend of Vox Machina offers: It has a unique essence, an aura between the childish and the adult, between nostalgia and freshness, between humor and drama that combine in perfect balance to be absolutely captivating..

Yes, it uses adult language without any type of filter and violence, as we said a few lines ago, scales impassively to the hearts of the viewers, but it is impossible to close an episode without a satisfied smile on your face.

VoxMachina2

Critical Role and Amazon Prime Video have created an entertaining story that fills you with good vibes. It does not demand or claim; it just delivers and hits the bull’s-eye to the delight of any fantasy and animation lover.

They will have taken some liberties when it comes to adapting the story and it is inevitable that the clichés of the role will make their appearance on the scene; And what else gives? The charisma of the characters and the performances makes everything else absolutely the same: we are here to forget about prejudices and jump into singing with Scanlan while we go up in flames.

The second season of The Legend of Vox Machina It is much bigger, more transcendental, epic and with missions of a higher caliber than the initial ones that we experienced in the first part, as if it were a video game.

It has laid the foundations of an arc that we will see resolved in that third season for which there is already a green light. Until then, it’s his turn to shake the dice, throw them on the table and… pray for a 20.
