Hotel Transylvania 2: why did the hero’s voice change between the first and the second film?

A hotel where you can relax mummies, werewolves, Frankenstein, skeletons and other monsters: here is the setting of the animated film Hotel Transylvaniareleased in theaters on February 13, 2013. The public was thus able to get to know the count Dracula , owner of the establishment, who prohibits access to a category of people that monsters fear and hate: humans. Things soon get complicated when Jonathan, a living human, bursts into the hotel and befriends Mavis, Dracula’s daughter. Fortunately, the story will take a much more positive turn, and the synopsis of the second part of the saga, Hotel Transylvania 2, proves it well. In this Animation Film of 2015, which will moreover be broadcast on TF1 this Friday, December 23 at 1:55 p.m. and which is still available on netflix, Johnny and Mavis get married, and even welcome a little boy, Dennis, half-human, half-vampire. A double identity that risks causing a stir in the family… In short, a fun family adventure full of twists and turns, which should delight young and old alike. Incidentally, this sequel introduced a major hero level change, Dracula.

A star in the casting

The more observant will probably have noted that the French voice of the most famous vampire is not the same than the one who dubbed the character in the first part. Indeed, in the first Hotel Transylvaniait is Serge Faliuthe regular voice of the American actor Adam Sandler(interpreter of Dracula in the original version) who lent his voice to the sharp-toothed count. But in Hotel Transylvania 2it is Kad Merad who took up the torch. The French actor thus returned to dubbing after Bears’ brother (2003), Happy Feet (2006) or even Megamind (2010). This choice raises questions, because Serge Faliu has not retired as the official voice actor of Adam Sandler, who went back behind the microphone in the original version of Hotel Transylvania 2. The explanation could be simple: the production probably wanted bet on the presence of a star in the casting to attract more people to the cinema. However, it is possible that Serge Faliu did not want to re-enlist, or that he had a schedule problem at that time. However, we do indeed find the French voice actor in the sequels of the saga, Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monstrous Vacation, available on Netflix, and Hotel Transylvania 4: Monster Changesreleased this year on Prime Video.

Alex Goude and Virginie Efira still dubbing

If the voice of the one nicknamed Drac in Hotel Transylvania changed in the second part, the other main characters of the animated film kept the same voices. Host and actor Alex Goudé thus resumed service by dubbing Jonathan, while the actress Virginie Efira still lends her stamp to Mavis, like in the first movie. There was still a new arrival in this cast, and not the least: vladthe father of Dracula, is indeed embodied by Michael Galabru. A surprising character to discover in Hotel Transylvania 2.
