For many years, grotesque “monsters” called “kaiju” have been appearing in Japan. To combat these powerful beasts, an elite military unit known as the Defense Corps has been created. This special unit risks their lives daily to protect civilians from the ‘kaiju’. Once a ‘kaiju’ is defeated, the ‘sweepers’ – who work for the ‘Professional Kaiju Cleaner Corporation’ – stay behind to dispose of their remains.
Kafka Hibino, the protagonist of the story of Kaiju No 8 he is a 32-year-old man who is dissatisfied with his job as a street sweeper. Hibino, from a very young age, has wanted to join the Defense Corps and kill ‘kaiju’ for a livelihood. However, after several failed attempts, Hibino gave up on his dreams of being a part of the Defense Corps and resigned himself to the mediocrity that earned him a decent salary as a street sweeper. However, when an ambitious young recruit named Leno Ichikawa joins his cleaning crew, Kafka Hibino is once again reminded of his desire to join the fight against the kaiju.
After a chain of unfortunate events, Kafka Hibino encounters a parasite-type ‘kaiju’ that makes its way through his body through his mouth and turns him into a humanoid monster. With his newfound powers, Kafka Hibino is determined to give his life’s dream one last chance.
