Everyone’s favorite since childhood animated series “Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers” has received a rebirth in the form of a full-length film based on it. In Russia, this creation can also be viewed, but only on torrents. However, real fans of two chipmunks and their friends from the early 1990s should not download the new hit, because the fantasy of modern American animators can get psychological trauma that is not at all childish.
To immediately reassure the especially impressionable, I will say, no, Chip and Dale did not become gay, and Roquefort did not turn into a non-binary person. But that’s where the good news ended. Due to Dale’s ambition, the rescue team fell apart. He himself unsuccessfully tries to organize a solo career and even made himself a 3D operation. Chip meanwhile got a serious job. He sells insurance to other cartoons.
However, the biggest changes took place in the lives of Gadget and Zipper. They got married, and they had as many as 42 mousewing children. The most unlucky lover of imported Roquefort cheese. The little mouse spent all his savings and got into debt. Actually, this fact became the main plot of the new film.
What is the new movie “Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers” about?
In the story, Roquefort is kidnapped by the leader of the mafia group Sweet Pan – an adult, degraded version of Peter Pan. The crime boss is known for kidnapping famous cartoon characters, forcing them to star in second-rate projects. So, the previous victims of the villain were the Flounder fish from The Little Mermaid and even Peppa pig. And since the police of the city, where ordinary people live together with the cartoons, turned out to be powerless in front of the criminal, the chipmunks and the sheriff’s assistant, a black girl Ellie Steckler, get down to business.
By the way, Disney fans will find a lot of acquaintances in the film. This is Roger Rabbit, and Scrooge McDuck, and three little pigs, and, for example, a magic carpet from Aladdin. In the film, in addition to Disney characters, you can also meet characters from other animation studios, such as The Simpsons or Batman. And the blue hedgehog Sonic appears as a degraded version of himself with teeth. Thus, “Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers” can be seen as a kind of encyclopedia of modern animation.
Of course, the combination of animation and live cinema today will not surprise anyone. Suffice it to recall the film by Robert Zemeckis “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, and in the latest film “Tom and Jerry” the mouse and the cat also find themselves in the world of people. The main difference between the full-length version of “Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers” was the combination of 2D animation and 3D animation. Anyway, $200 million was spent on production. For comparison: the same “Tom and Jerry” cost the creators only $ 50 million.
What critics and audiences say about the film
Foreign critics and viewers nevertheless appreciated the new life of Chip and Dale. On Rotten Tomatoes, the new film has an 80% fresh rating based on 97 reviews and 82% positive audience reviews. The Guardian noted that the late 80s/early 90s animated series has received a “satirical but serious reboot with sly attacks on the American entertainment industry”. And some even wondered how director Akiva Shaffer managed to convince Disney to decide on a “massive self-deprecating parody.”
