Netflix acquired Nimona, a long-running expanded adaptation of ND Stevenson’s bestselling graphic novel. The project was in development at 20th Century Fox then Disney before being canceled and finally relaunched at Netflix which will finally release it in 2023.
netflix Nimona is made by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane (disguised spies) with the production assistance of DNEG and Annapurna Pictures, who notably made the following films Vice, Phantom Thread, Library, The missing link, and more.
Marc Haimes adapts the scenario of Nimona, who also worked on the Netflix series Lost Ollie.
Nimona had a checkered production history as it was previously developed for Fox and then Disney from 2015. The project was initially produced by Blue Sky Studios, part of 20th Century Fox’s animation division.
It was originally slated for a 2020 release, which was later pushed back to a 2022 release. Production was already underway when Disney acquired Fox, and in February 2021 it was announced that Disney, which already owns Pixar and Walt Disney Animation, was going to shut down Blue Sky.
This has given rise to much speculation about Blue Sky’s future. Nimona, and at the time, employees working on the project said the film “probably will never see the light of day”. Shortly after, it was learned that the production of Nimona would be interrupted, and the film would not be released.
There have been rumors of a Nimona resurrection for months, and in early February 2022, Netflix filed a copyright for the word “Nimona.”
Then a month later Nimona was announced to have landed at Netflix, and production on the film restarted in early 2022, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Reacting to the news of the film’s takeover by Netflix, ND Stevenson said on Twitter:
“Nimona has always been a lively little story that didn’t want to stop. She’s a fighter…but there are also great people fighting for her. I’m so excited to announce that THE NIMONA MOVIE IS OUT… and it will be brought to you in 2023 by Annapurna and Netflix.”

Netflix has confirmed that Nimona will be released on the streamer sometime in 2023, which was confirmed by a USA Today report in January 2023.
