Of them Pinocchio come out this year in the space of four months. Two directors for two competing SVOD platforms, Disney + and Netflix. His Pinocchio is a remake of the animated film released in 1940, itself inspired by the Italian tale by Carlo Collodi (1881). Geppetto, played by Tom Hanks, is a sad wood sculptor who, to console himself for his loneliness, builds a wooden puppet he calls Pinocchio. He then makes a wish that he will turn into a real boy: the blue fairy, played by Cynthia Erivo, grants his wish by bringing the puppet to life. But there remains one condition for Pinocchio to become human, he must prove himself worthy of it. This is how a thrilling adventure full of pitfalls begins. Alongside the cricket Jiminy, who acts as his conscience, Pinocchio will learn to become “brave, honest and generous”.
Tom Hanks, very credible in Geppetto, evolves in the middle of animated characters among which the well-known animals of the original film. The companions Figaro the cat and Cléo the goldfish, but also Sophie the garbage-eating seagull or Jiminy the cricket, narrator of the story, who bring a touch of lightness and humor to the film.
This mix between real actors and animated works thanks to the sets that harmonize the whole. Made in “live action”, the different fantastic and magical worlds transport us from beginning to end. The appearance of the animals has also been designed in detail. The two villains, Grand Coquin and Gédéon, take on a very realistic appearance with their fox and cat fur.
Disney chose to stay true to the first Pinocchio from 1940,keeping the characters with a few novelties. There is Fabiana, this new heroine who will help the young puppet escape from the clutches of Stromboli. This itinerant puppeteer wishes to exploit Pinocchio in his shows and to enrich himself thanks to him. The film also retains the moralizing, somewhat old-fashioned aspect of the original tale. Pinocchio must throughout his adventure learn to choose between good and evil. The famous moment when his nose gets bigger teaches him not to lie. The Ile aux Plaisirs is also present in this new version. It is an amusement park where children stuff themselves, drink beer, deface and steal objects. It is in this cursed place that Pinocchio learns that unruly children turn into donkeys. In short, a story worthy of old tales, with an instructive dimension that we enjoy watching.
