Although Puss in Boots 2: The Last Quest is, as its name suggests, the continuation of the solo adventures of Shrek’s feline companion, the film does not require at any time to have seen the first opus – Puss in Boots – and still minus the quadrilogy centered on the green ogre. The story told, strongly focused on humor and action, can be appreciated, regardless of the level of knowledge of the spectators concerning the saga of DreamWorks. So there’s no need to do your homework before going to the nearest cinema, even if the attachment to Puss in Boots and his companions can be a plus.
The story is as sharp as the sword of our reckless red tom, but knows how to take its time to present the issues and introduce a whole range of new characters able to seduce young and old. This last quest is intended for a large, mainly family audience, the opposite would have been surprising, but not only. The themes tackled, the sometimes heroic sometimes crazy situations, but also the sharp verbal duels give rhythm to this colorful animated film and the particularly licked realization.
The artistic direction is quite classic. The feature film follows the path traced by its predecessors, the technological innovations of the last ten years as a bonus. Nevertheless, as visually faithful to its peers as it is, Puss in Boots 2 has a graphic style that is as surprising as it is controlled during the action sequences. “Traditional” 3D animation gives way to a much more marked style emphasizing a series of creative games through its slow motions, accelerations and freeze frames. Puss in Boots 2: The Last Quest is a nice surprise that will please all members of the family, quite simply.
