In order to get back on his feet, our hairy hero literally launches into the quest of his life.
He embarks on an epic adventure to the edge of the Dark Forest to unearth the mythical Wish Star, the only one likely to restore his lost lives. But when you only have one left, you have to know how to lay low, be careful and ask for help. This is how he turns to his former partner and best enemy of all time: the bewitching Kitty Pettes De Velours.
Some dark touches…
Universal Pictures France
If the first Puss in Boots was very folkloric with a western tone, Januel P. Mercado and Joel Crawford wanted this sequel to be deeper. Producer Mark Swift explains: “We wanted to keep the western universe, in order to maintain a unity of tone, but for this iteration we felt that we were going to go for a blacker version like in The good, the bad and the ugly.”
Joel Crawford continues: “In our film, like in Leone’s, we find all these high-flying criminals all heading for the same gold mine. 4 such different personalities who all want to win this last quest. That’s what tends the film nervously and gives it its particularity. We incorporated some very dark touches from the tales of the Brothers Grimm.”
A long-standing project

Universal Pictures France
As early as 2013, Dreamworks started Puss in Boots 2: The Last Quest, which was postponed several times due to studio restructuring. This sequel was even considered as a reboot before this idea was finally abandoned.
In February 2019, the project was relaunched but, due to the Covid and the confinement, it took until March 2021 to see things materialize.
Cult figure

Universal Pictures France
Puss in Boots 2: The Last Quest follows the animated film Puss in Boots, itself a spin-off of the lucrative Shrek saga. The character of Puss in Boots has therefore appeared in all the sequels to Shrek (Shrek 2, Shrek the third, Shrek 4, there was an end), in his own film (Puss in Boots), but also in multiple videos or TV series. signed DreamWorks Animation.
Starting point

Universal Pictures France
In Puss in Boots, the feline spent its time bragging about its ability to save the world. He wakes up today after eight lives, confronted with a real existential crisis. Margie Cohn, president of DreamWorks Animation, says:
“It seemed like a very good starting point for such an exuberant character. What would Puss in Boots be without a big adventure? What if he suddenly became vulnerable. Even though he’s self-centered, this times he is forced to evolve emotionally.”
“It was crucial for the team at DreamWorks Animation that this final chapter be completely independent of the Shrek universe, while still remaining as exciting, funny, spectacular and extraordinary.”
