Behind a great video game, there is a great creative team behind it so that the player experience is entertaining, perfect and complete. Bruno Velasquezthe animation director of God of War: Ragnarokis one of those responsible for the Santa Monica Studio title being the success it has been since its recent launch this Wednesday, November 9.
This week, FayerWayer was in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, to cover the launch event of the new God of War. We also witnessed how the Brazilian town prepared for the game’s premiere, with nordic-themed adorned bus stops.
We also had the pleasure of seeing the facilities of the PlayStation offices in the city of São Paulo, in which we were able to talk with Bruno Velásquez by videoconferencewho answered all of our questions about the release of God of War: Ragnarok.
Bruno, of Mexican origin and a huge Star Wars fan, is the director of animation for Sony – Santa Monica, who has been in the games industry since 2002 and has been at the helm of the God of War series.
In our talk, He spoke to us about how he represents Latin America in the video game industry, the juice he got from the PlayStation 5 for the development of Ragnarok, among other questions.
FayerWayer’s conversation with Bruno Velásquez
How did you harness the power of the PS5 for the development of God of War?
“The things that we had at our disposal to make the game more impactful on the PlayStation 5 is 3D Audio, which we didn’t have before and that makes the experience better. Also the graphics and the way the game looks, much more detailed (…) the way it moves, much faster. Also the control, the ‘haptic feedback’ (haptic feedback) and the adaptive triggers (adaptive triggers), the way it feels when you’re in combat. It feels so much better, just like with the cinematics.”
Understanding the generational differences, will PS4 users be as happy as PS5 users?
“In 2018 we learned how the community reacted to the game and we always make changes based on the results, because we want to make something that people like. Your support is the most important thing to us and we are very supportive of those who want to continue the story on the PlayStation 4 because we understand that not everyone has the PlayStation 5 yet and we don’t want to leave all those fans out. We want them to continue the God of War story with us.”
What comes after God of War: Ragnarok?
“(laughs) The only one who knows that is Cory Barlog (Creative Director of Santa Monica Studios and writer of the God of War series). He has everything on his mind, I wish he would tell me everything. But right now the focus is God of War: Ragnarok. We are very happy because people can finally play it”.
Do you think that the arrival of Norse mythology in God of War is the ideal starting point for a live action film adaptation and even a movie universe?
“For me personally, I like to see that there are Sony projects that have been made like Uncharted or The Last of Us show. It looks very nice that the games and those stories can be shown in other media. For now, we want to see if fans like the story of God of War: Ragnarok. The focus is the video game, let’s hope you like it, and if something comes out in the future, let it be after we check what you think of the story of Kratos in Ragnarok”.

How does it feel to represent Mexico and Latin America as an animation director?
“When it comes to animation, what I want to do is something that people really like. It really is a pleasure to be able to represent and be part of the Hispanic and Latin American community..
What message can you send to young Latinos who aspire to dedicate themselves to animation?
I want to send a message (to those who dream of being animation directors in Latin America) to support them, to tell them that now, with technology advancing so much, there is more access to many things, to learn and even to make video games from home. I feel that we Latin Americans have some very creative ideas that perhaps are not done in other places, that will help us a lot. I hope that more Latino teams that develop games can be seen and formed. With social networks you can see more things and can reach more people”.
