Find out where to watch Isle of Dogs, Wes Anderson’s second stop-motion animated feature after 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Fantastic Mr. Fox was director Wes Anderson’s first attempt at entering the world of animation, and his Roald Dahl story of a patriarchal fox and his family battling a group of farmers earned several nominations for Oscars. Since then, Anderson has directed Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel, earning him even more critical acclaim. Still, fans craved another animal-based feature with Wes Anderson’s quirky animation style.
Finally, in 2018, Wes Craven could no longer ignore his fans’ wishes with Isle of Dogs and its original script. You can watch his latest animated film now on Disney+.

An animated spectacle worth waiting for
Isle of Dogs tells the story of a pack of dogs evicted to Trash Island by the mayor of Megasaski after a canine flu pandemic breaks out in Japan. The mayor’s nephew, Atari, manages to steal a plane and flies to the island in search of his own dog, Spots. Shortly after arriving at the deserted dump, Atari joins a pack of dogs and embarks on a quest to not only find out where Spots is, but also to reveal the true motivation behind the mayor’s banishment of the dogs.
Nine years have passed between Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs, and the animated world rendered in Wes Anderson’s latest animated feature has clearly progressed with greater detail and higher production values. Isle of Dogs is set in the fictional Japanese town of Megasaki, and its human and canine inhabitants are depicted using an incredible 1,000 handmade puppets. Unlike the foxes and other animals in Fantastic Mr. Fox, the dogs in this film are animated to move and behave like dogs, not humans. While much of the film takes place on Trash Island where the dogs are exiled, the Japanese cityscape is heavily inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime film High and Low.
Fantastic Mr. Fox featured an all-star cast of voice actors led by George Clooney, Meryl Streep, and Bill Murray, and Isle of Dogs isn’t short on star power itself. Bryan Cranston stars as Chief, one of the first dogs Atari meets after landing on Trash Island. Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum and once again Bill Murray also lend their talents to bring to life the other dogs playing a vital role in the story.
