Why Spider-Verse 2 Isn’t A Kids’ Movie According To The Spider-Man Animator
While some might think Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a kids movie just because it’s animated, one of the animators says that’s not the case.
A senior animator explains why the upcoming Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse isn’t a kid’s movie. Across The Spider-Verse is a sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, starring Shameik Moore as Miles Morales. The highly anticipated 2023 film brings several new Spider-People to the fore, including Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099, as Miles begins to explore the wider Spider-Verse.
During an interview with The Direct, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, lead character animator Ere Santos explains why he thinks the movie isn’t necessarily for kids. It comes down to the story itself, which Santos finds very exciting. Check out the full quote below:
It was a really difficult project. So that was a lot of frustrating moments, something every production has. But what drove us was we would get frustrated, or something would change, or a sequence would get cut, and then we’d see a new render, and we’d be like, ‘Okay, okay? Let’s go, let’s go,” and also, some of the choices the characters made in the story were like, “What? Alright Alright. Is it a children’s movie? I guess it’s not a children’s movie. Alright, cool. Yeah, it’s good.’ So it’s very, very, super exciting for me.
Whether in the original comics, animated series/movies, or live-action, Spider-Man is best known for doing good for the little man. This attitude has earned the crawler the nickname Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which goes for virtually all versions of the hero. Peter Parker is the most famous, but there have been others, like Miles from Spider-Verse. Based on Santos’ comments, it sounds like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles will be faced with some tough decisions, just like other iterations of Spider-Man across different mediums.
One of the most popular examples of a completely selfless Spider-Man can be found at the end of Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man game. The Sinister Six manage to release the Devil’s Breath virus in Times Square, causing a mass outbreak. After Spider-Man stops the villains and retrieves a cure for the virus, he faces one of the toughest choices of his life. There’s just enough antidote to save May, Peter’s dying aunt, or to synthesize a vaccine that could save the people of New York. Peter makes the difficult choice to let May die in order to save everyone.
Spider-Man has also shown mature decision-making throughout his live-action history, as seen with 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home when Tom Holland’s Peter leaves everyone he loves behind. forget in order to save the multiverse from implosion. Whether Miles will face a decision as difficult as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse remains to be seen, but there is clearly precedent for this kind of story in previous Spider-Man media. If the first film followed Miles growing in his powers, the sequel could very well see him grow into a hero. All will become clear when Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse debuts in June.
